(Daily Daegu-Gyeongbuk News = Reporter Yang Seung-mi) = Yeongju City completed the "5th Section of Cultural Street Maintenance Project," which started construction at the end of last year, in six months and started to greet guests with a new look.
According to the city on the 12th, the newly created section is the 5th section with the largest floating population (Paribaget Yeongju branch to Landrova section), and first of all, the old sidewalk block was renovated with granite flagstones. In addition, it has changed its appearance to fresh streets such as installation of fiber optic sculptures and floors, rest-type flowerbeds using stone, a roof pagoda, and an outdoor small stage.
In addition, Cheongdan style golden four-iron trees were planted and flowerbeds were reorganized to provide a rest area for citizens to rest comfortably, and subtle lighting was installed to make it a street where people wanted to walk so that they could enjoy the beautiful scenery at night.
Section 5 has been loved by citizens for operating as a car-free street since the creation of the cultural street. Prior to the start of the construction, the Merchants Association requested the lifting of vehicle traffic restrictions and the opening of general passageways, but agreed to continue operating as a car-free street by attracting understanding and participation through research services to revitalize the cultural street commercial district and a briefing session for residents.

Yeongju 1-dong has functioned as the central commercial district of Yeongju, but the floating population is gradually decreasing due to changes in the commercial district, and it is expected to restore the central commercial district as well as enhance the quality of life of citizens through cultural street improvement.
Starting with the five-section maintenance project, the city plans to gradually promote the maintenance project for the entire section of cultural streets to create a new concept commercial district where citizens and tourists can come, stay, and enjoy shopping.
Lee Dae-hee, chairman of Culture Street Merchants Association, said, "I am happy that the cultural street, which has been in need of new maintenance since 2009, has been reborn as a beautiful street," adding, "I hope that the street commercial area will gradually become active as citizens and tourists use rest and cultural spaces."
I would like to thank citizens and merchants for understanding the inconveniences of dust and noise during the construction period, said Park Nam-seo, Mayor of Yeongju. "We hope that the creation of beautiful streets will not only improve the quality of life of citizens, but also inspire a new wind in the local economy."
On the other hand, Yeongju-si is highly regarded both internally and externally for promoting local residents' settlement environment improvement and business recovery projects, such as urban regeneration projects and Saemaul projects, in addition to maintenance projects to restore commercial districts centered on Yeongju-dong.
